# UnRedbox Wiki
Welcome to the **UnRedbox Wiki** repository. This project is focused on hosting and documenting information extracted from a **Redbox Kiosks**. Our goal is to explore and understand the software and configuration of the kiosk system, while also preserving and sharing our findings.
## Project Overview
The UnRedbox project aims to demystify the inner workings of the Redbox kiosks. This repository serves as a central wiki for:
- **Hardware documentation**: Gathering information about the various hardware implementations.
- **System configuration**: Understanding the settings and behavior of the system.
- **Security considerations**: Insights into potential vulnerabilities or interesting features.
Please note that this project is for educational and research purposes only.
## Contributing
To contribute, please log in with your Discord account at [redbox.wiki](https://redbox.wiki) and follow the guidelines below.
### [Before You Contribute](https://redbox.wiki/en/contributing)
All contributions are licensed under the **Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike 4.0 International license**. This includes media uploads, text contributions, or anything else submitted to the wiki. You may not license any contributions under any other terms.
### Site Navigation
The navigation panel on the side of the website is controlled by redbox.wiki admins. If you'd like a page to appear in the navigation, please contact **codeHusky/Loki** on Discord.
### New Pages
Before adding a new page, ensure that an existing page doesn't already cover the topic you're looking to work on. If there's overlap, see if it's more appropriate to add to an existing page rather than creating a new one. We aim to keep the number of pages minimal while avoiding excessively long pages of documentation.
If you still need to create a new page, feel free to do so. Just make sure you contact **codeHusky/Loki** in the Redbox Tinkering Discord to have your new page added to the navigation.
### Writing Tone and Style
All contributions should use a professional tone. Avoid using terms like "I" or referring to yourself directly. If you're documenting a technique you created, feel free to credit yourself, but avoid taking credit for "discovering" things that exist in every kiosk.
## License
This project is licensed under the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. See the [LICENSE](LICENSE.txt) file for details.

Vertical Merchandise Zone. On most units, the rotating carousel will have two posts of a noticable color (often yellow) to signify this zone. Intended for loading new discs into the unit. The VMZ was added in place of the QLM (Quick Load Module) in kiosks with an additional (8th) deck for merchandising and added a small shallow plastic bin at the bottom of the kiosk to collect disks.

Unsure what this acronym means, but it appears to refer to the original method of loading/unloading Redbox kiosks back when the company was young. This was later replaced with the VMZ.

# Paint
The paint officially used by Redbox to refurbish kiosks is "B66R11038 DTM Acrylic Gloss Color Safety Red" which can generally be found most places that stock paint. It's recommended to remove any rust via sanding and paint over it with "B66A50 DTM Bonding Primer" before using the red paint.

To access the admin interface connect to the modem, head to 192.168.0.1 and when prompted for your password use the default password on the back of the modem. You may need to do a factory reset by pushing in the recessed reset button on the ethernet-port-side of the modem to deprovision the modem and make it accessible with the default credentials.
If you're having issues getting into the unit after a factory reset, try removing the SIM during the reset process. You can put the SIM back in once it's unprovisioned.

This results in the user interface being exceptionally slow and choppy. Animations will stutter and tear, and overall it looks quite bad.

You can attempt to fix this by simply turning on the GPU drivers in Device Manager, accessible via Redbox Desktop. Techs have noted that this may not work and the device will simply not boot until you enter safe mode, though this doesn't appear to strictly be the case.

You can attempt to fix this by simply turning on the GPU drivers in Device Manager, accessible via Redbox Desktop.
One potential route is using a DisplayPort to DVI cable or adapter and re-running the cable through the harness to the door if your VGA cable doesn't work. Note that Windows will take forever to boot the first time you do this, so give it 10-20 minutes before you give up and reset everything. It will seem like it's frozen, but it's not. If your disk activity light is out and the keyboard isn't responding, something may have went wrong.

One potential route is using a DisplayPort to DVI cable or adapter and re-running the cable through the harness to the door if your VGA cable doesn't work. Note that Windows will take forever to boot the first time you do this, so give it 10-20 minutes before you give up and reset everything.
Titles Missing In Redbox Engine

Kiosks have been reported to have issues where the titles in the engine disappear. The cause for this is still TBD. However following the steps below should fix the unit to working order.

Locate the profile.data files modified date. This file will be located in
C:\Program Files\REDS\KioskEngine\Data\profile.data

Set the time and date of the machine to a date shortly after the modified date on the profile.data (Ex if the modified data is 7/23/24 set the date to mid September 09/25/24)

todo

Kiosk Error Screens

The basic error screens on a Redbox have different color backgrounds, indicating the problem at a basic level. Credits to @mordanthanus in the Discord for posting this info.

Black with white text Kiosk is booting or updating. Black screens automatically clear themselves when completed, usually 5-15 minutes. Watchdog must be turned on in RBD. ·

Orange with white text Kiosk is conducting a partial or full maintenance sync and will reboot to customer screen when complete. ·

Green with white text The kiosk engine reports a database access error and places kiosk into maintenance mode. SOFTFILE0x errors. ·

Red with white text Machine error alert. Generally requires human intervention but may fix itself during an overnight reboot.

Powering On a Redbox Kiosk Computer After a BIOS Reset

Redbox kiosk computers are configured to automatically power on when connected to a power source (autoboot). However, if the BIOS is reset—whether from a manual reset or due to a CMOS battery failure—this autoboot setting will revert to its default state and become disabled. After this, the computer will require a manual power-on each time until the autoboot setting is re-enabled in the BIOS.

Locating the Power Button on Premio Computers

On Premio computers, the power button is discreet and may not be immediately visible. It is located on the back of the unit, near the I/O panel. Look for a small button close to the I/O LEDs (typically used to indicate network or drive activity). Pressing this button will power on the computer, allowing access to the BIOS to re-enable the autoboot setting if needed.

Note: Once the autoboot on power setting is re-enabled in the BIOS, the computer should resume automatic boot-up on power connection, as originally configured.
