---+++ Roadmap, Milestones, Timeline
* Feb/06 - Initial prototype implementation
Initial prototype implementation completed mid february, which consisted of a simple data model containing character (categorical and quantitative) data, state state, and related support data (labels, types, etc). Metadata returned as RDF with dublincore triples describing the character or state. Data returned as SDD instance documents.
* Mar/06 - Revision of prototype implementation
Data model now mapped to the majority of SDD elements.
LSID authority revised:
* authority: identifylife.org
* namespaces: dataset, character, state
* object: id of dataset, character, or state.
* revision: versioning details as yet unspecified
Metadata is returned as RDF with dublin core triples. An RDFS describing the relationships between the data returned by the authority is still being developed.
Data is returned as SDD instance documents representing the object referenced by the LSID.
* Mar/06 - Population of dataset
The dataset is currently populated with an SDD document describing normative characters of Palms (130 characters, 377 states)
* Mar/06 - Revision of use cases, RDFS and data model
* Apr/06 - Deployment to production server
* Apr/06 - Further review of RDFS and use cases
----
---+++ Discussion, Implementation Issues
See some initial discussion (prior to GUID1Workshop) about GUIDs for character data at GUIDsForDescriptiveData (and DescriptiveDataSummaryToJan06).
-- Main.BobMorris 2006-03-21 07:07:55: To be sure, I argue strongly on the GUID Wiki against semantic content in LSID's, so I shouldn't care, but I am nevertheless curious what you mean by "pk_id, where pk is the primary key value from the related table?" Also
and reasoning like this is one of the arguments against semantics in the LSID, but here goes anyway
it doesn't look like you contemplate singling out Terminology for LSID treatment. Socially, I would think there might be greater acceptance of "normative" Terminology than normative Descriptions, especially since I suspect, but am not sure, that SDD is too weak for locale-dependent descriptions, which may be very important.
I'm not entirely sure what the charge is for the resolution protytpes. Are we supposed to make proposals that other resolution services for the same notion would find useful to use, especially as to the metadata? Is that a goal for you, or are you designing entirely to the data model of the Identify Life project?]
----
-- Main.DamianBarnier 2006-03-23: Bob, I have revised the statement to, "object: id of dataset, character, or state."
In our instance the object value is composed as pk_id where pk is the primary key of the record describing the dataset, character, or state in our data model, and id is the id value of the character, or state, from the source document. This value, due to its composition, will be unique for our data sets, and I believe should be reasonably opaque in most cases. The intention was to create a unique reference at no cost (ie. not needing to assign or maintain a unique identifier), not to add any semantic content to the LSID.
Consider the following data:
<verbatim>
<CategoricalCharacter id='10' debugkey='2_10:Height'>
<Label xml:lang='en_US' audience='en'>
<Text>Height</Text>
</Label>
<States>
<StateDefinition id='11' debugkey='7_11:m high'>
<Label xml:lang='en_US' audience='en'>
<Text>m high</Text>
</Label>
</StateDefinition>
</States>
</CategoricalCharacter>
</verbatim>
LSIDs for the character and state described above would take the form:
* [[lsidres:urn:lsid:identifylife.org:character:2_10][urn:lsid:identifylife.org:character:2_10]]
* [[lsidres:urn:lsid:identifylife.org:state:7_11][urn:lsid:identifylife.org:state:7_11]]
At present the prototype simply provides a means of referencing elements of the data model via an LSID, and via this LSID obtaining basic RDF metadata describing the element, and SDD data defining the element, merely a starting point from which to do something meaningful.
The data model for our prototype is simply a mapping of SDD to java, and is not shared with IdentifyLife.
----
-- Main.DamianBarnier 2006-03-24: The authority has now been moved to a publically accessable server, and should be available once the DNS changes propogate. I have added a crude webapp/frontend for browsing the characters/states and their associated metadata/data directly, it will be available at http://lsid.identifylife.org:8080/index.jsp. ---+++ Roadmap, Milestones, Timeline
* Feb/06 - Initial prototype implementation
Initial prototype implementation completed mid february, which consisted of a simple data model containing character (categorical and quantitative) data, state state, and related support data (labels, types, etc). Metadata returned as RDF with dublincore triples describing the character or state. Data returned as SDD instance documents.
* Mar/06 - Revision of prototype implementation
Data model now mapped to the majority of SDD elements.
LSID authority revised:
- authority: identifylife.org
- namespaces: dataset, character, state
- object: id of dataset, character, or state.
- revision: versioning details as yet unspecified
Metadata is returned as RDF with dublin core triples. An RDFS describing the relationships between the data returned by the authority is still being developed.
Data is returned as SDD instance documents representing the object referenced by the LSID.
* Mar/06 - Population of dataset
The dataset is currently populated with an SDD document describing normative characters of Palms (130 characters, 377 states)
* Mar/06 - Revision of use cases, RDFS and data model
* Apr/06 - Deployment to production server
* Apr/06 - Further review of RDFS and use cases

---+++ Discussion, Implementation Issues
See some initial discussion (prior to [[GUID1Workshop]]) about GUIDs for character data at GUIDsForDescriptiveData (and DescriptiveDataSummaryToJan06).
[ BobMorris 2006-03-21 07:07:55: To be sure, I argue strongly on the GUID Wiki against semantic content in LSID's, so I shouldn't care, but I am nevertheless curious what you mean by "pk_id, where pk is the primary key value from the related table?" Also---and reasoning like this is one of the arguments against semantics in the LSID, but here goes anyway---it doesn't look like you contemplate singling out Terminology for LSID treatment.
[ DamianBarnier 2006-03-21: Bob, I have revised the statement to, "object: id of dataset, character, or state."
<CategoricalCharacter id='10' debugkey='2_10:Height'>
<Label xml:lang='en_US' audience='en'>
<Text>Height</Text>
</Label>
<States>
<StateDefinition id='11' debugkey='7_11:m high'>
<Label xml:lang='en_US' audience='en'>
<Text>m high</Text>
</Label>
</StateDefinition>
</States>
</CategoricalCharacter>
LSIDs for the character and state described above would take the form:
urn:lsid:identifylife.org:character:2_10
urn:lsid:identifylife.org:state:7_11
At present the prototype simply provides a means of referencing elements of the data model via an LSID, and via this LSID obtaining basic RDF metadata describing the element, and SDD data defining the element, merely a starting point from which to do something meaningful.
The data model for our prototype is simply a mapping of SDD to java, and is not shared with IdentifyLife. ]

The current state of the authority prototype is:
- A mapping of the majority of SDD/UBIF types (approx 80%) into java objects. (re-used)
- A mapping of the java objects to relational tables (using xdoclet/hibernate). (re-used)
- A StAX XML parser to populate the java object model from SDD documents. (re-used)
- LSID authority java stack, details are:
- authority: identifylife.org
- namespaces: dataset, concept_tree, character, state
- objects: pk_label where pk is the primary key of the record in the related table, and label is the value of the label (first) on the object. In the case of datasets the label value is dataset.
- revision: versioning details as yet unspecified
- Metadata is returned as RDF with dublin core triples. An RDFS describing the relationships between the data returned by the authority is still being developed.
- Data is returned as SDD instance documents representing the object referenced by the LSID.
