Is this approximately correct? I fully agree that audience-mechanism provided by BDI.SDD_ has no relation to this. For the terminology-driven parts, multiple audiences may be interesting, they do allow multiple wordings for essentially the same thing. BDI.SDD_ coded descriptions are a bit more structured. They attempt to support a structured terminology for more things than DELTA. This layer is called "modifiers", indicating that DELTA-like character-state or character-measure-value statements (which is essentially a variable-value model) are modified. The most important modifiers are frequency, certainty, spatial and temporal modifieres. Beyond this, also general modifiers, both for entire character, and in the categorical case for individual states. This has no equivalent in BioLink, which treats these parts as unstructured text. BDI.SDD_ does also allow free-form text (called Notes), but the position of it has no semantics. That is, every * Categorical Character has * modifiers modifying the entire character (esp. spatial/temporal/certainty) * Images associated with the character in a specific description (in addition to those explaining or representing the character or state as a whole, which are found in the terminology) * coding Status values (inapplicable, unknown, not interpretable, not-to-be scored, etc.) * free-form text Notes for the entire character. * States, each of which may have: * frequency modifier * modifier of degree ("strongly") * free-form text Notes for a single state This model does not allow to have a note before or after the character or state, respectively. This is thought to be necessary, to allow a multilingual, translatable structure, since the subtleties of positional placements may only depend on language, or may try to express real content, which is then almost impossible to translate. However, the NaturalLanguageDescriptions essentially have very similar model, without the constraints. They allow free-form text anywhere. This text may or may not correspond (be marked up) with an element in the terminology. I believe that what BioLink attempts is an authoring tools for NaturalLanguageDescriptions. Although BDI.SDD_ was mostly thinking about markup of legacy data, I see no problems in using this structure also for authoring new descriptions. Is this wrong?
